University of Cincinnati offers freshmen free cell phones

In an effort to improve communication with students and tap into new revenue sources, the University of Cincinnati launched a voluntary program offering free Nokia cellular phones to incoming freshmen.

Though the phone is free, students must purchase the UC Mobile Plan, which the institution created with Cincinnati Bell. The phones can be used to alert students of changes in course time and location and the locations of shuttle buses on campus, university officials said.
