Violations cost U. of New Mexico

The University of New Mexico will hand out fewer football scholarships and have fewer coaches recruiting off campus due to penalties exacted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association and university officials after an investigation found cases of academic fraud involving two former assistant coaches.

The Chronicle of Higher Education reported that the university is on three years probation stemming from a situation in 2004 in which three academically ineligible recruits received credit in correspondence courses without doing any work.
