WUGA celebrates 20 years with “Once in a Blue Moon”

Athens, Ga. – A live variety show celebrating the 20th anniversary of WUGA 91.7/97.9 FM, cobbles together musical acts and homegrown talent that’s not likely to share the stage again for many moons.

Scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 19 in Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall on the University of Georgia campus, “Once in a Blue Moon” features music that represents the diverse range the station covers.

“Normally you’ll hear classical music at one time and jazz at another time, then folk music on Saturday night and then contemporary rock sometimes. This show spans the genres that you hear in a typical week on WUGA,” said Robb Holmes, the station’s program director. “The music is not just representative of the range that we play on the air, but also the diverse music that you find in our community.”

The lineup boasts acts like gospel singer Rosa Thurmond, Zydefunk featuring Charlie Wooton, rock and blues outfit The Wildcats, the UGA Opera Ensemble, and the jazz stylings of the Rand Lines Trio.

The show also features former WUGA hosts Angela Elam, now on the nationally distributed “New Letters on the Air,” and David Bryant. Mary Kay Mitchell, WUGA news director, will host the event.

Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased from the Performing Arts Center Box Office by calling 706/542-4400 or 888/289-8497.

The show will be broadcast on 91.7 and 97.9 FM beginning at 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.wuga.org.
