Faculty at Youngstown State University in northeastern Ohio voted early last month to go on strike only days before the start of fall semester classes.
Disagreement over salary, benefits and awards were among the key issues being disputed, according to the YSU-Ohio Education Association, which represents the faculty.
The university’s president said the faculty rejected a proposal that included 3 percent pay raises in each of the next three years.
The proposal also called for faculty to contribute between 0.75 percent and 1.5 percent of their annual base salary to health insurance premiums for the first time.
