Georgia Museum of Art wins SECAC award

Athens, Ga. – The Southeastern College Art Conference recently gave the award for Outstanding Exhibition and Catalogue of Historical Materials to the Georgia Museum of Art publication and exhibition “The American Scene on Paper: Prints and Drawings from the Schoen Collection.”
Paul Manoguerra, curator of American art at the Georgia Museum of Art, who organized the exhibition and served as the principal author of the catalogue, accepted the award on behalf of the museum.

“I am grateful to the Southeastern College Art Conference for this award that recognizes the hard work of staff members at the Georgia Museum of Art and the quality of the objects amassed by the collector Jason Schoen,” said Manoguerra.

The art in the catalogue reflects the many political, social and economic changes that occurred in the United States during the Great Depression and World War II. The traveling exhibition, which includes a selection of the works on paper, was most recently on view at the Columbus Museum. The exhibition will be on view in full at the Georgia Museum of Art after its reopening in 2011.

Each year SECAC recognizes an exhibition of historical materials considered exemplary for its design, installation and/or catalogue. The SECAC is a nonprofit organization that seeks to facilitate cooperation and ongoing dialogue about pertinent creative, scholarly and educational issues among teachers and administrators in universities, colleges, community colleges, professional art schools and museums. The organization represents the 12 states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia but also includes members from across the United States and abroad.
