Janet Jakobsen to deliver 19th annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture at UGA

Athens, Ga. – Janet Jakobsen, director of the Barnard College Center for Research on Women and a professor of human rights, gender, sexuality and women’s studies, will deliver the 19th annual Andrea Carson Coley Lecture at the University of Georgia on April 19 at 12:30 p.m. in the M. Smith Griffith Auditorium of the Georgia Museum of Art.

Jakobsen will lecture on “The Woman Question: Gender, Sexuality and Public Policy.” A reception honoring the Coley family will precede the lecture at 11:30 a.m. in the Georgia Museum of Art’s lobby. The lecture and reception are free and open to the public.

Before entering academia, Jakobsen was a policy analyst and lobbyist in Washington, D.C. Among her research interests are gender, sexuality and religion in American public life; social movements and feminist alliance politics; feminist and queer ethics; and global issues of economics and violence.

She is the author of “Secularisms,” edited with A. Pellegrini (Duke University Press, 2008), “Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance,” with A. Pellegrini (New York University Press, 2003; Beacon Press, 2004), “Interventions: Activists and Academics Respond to Violence,” edited with E. Castelli (Palgrave Macmillan, 2004), and “Working Alliances and the Politics of Difference: Diversity and Feminist Ethics” (Indiana University Press, 1998), as well as many articles and chapters.

Jakobsen received her doctorate from Emory University.

The Andrea Carson Coley Lecture, hosted by the UGA Institute for Women’s Studies, was endowed through a donation from Andrew and Kathy Coley in memory of their daughter, Andrea Carson Coley (1972-1993), who was a certificate candidate in women’s studies. Each spring, the lecture brings scholars conducting cutting-edge research in lesbian and gay studies to campus.

This year’s lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Women’s Studies, the Georgia Museum of Art and the LGBT Resource Center.
