Skidaway Institute leading underwater hurricane investigation

Assistant professor Catherine Edwards inspects a glider to prepare for Gliderpalooza 2013, when more than a dozen of the underwater robots were launched simultaneously in the project involving multiple East Coast research institutions.

Catherine Edwards, an assistant professor at the University of Georgia’s Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, helped establish a network of universities to gather hurricane information with underwater robots called autonomous underwater vehicles or gliders.

WSAV-TV in Savannah talked with her about the project and the research network, known as SECOORA, the Southeastern Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association. Here’s the station’s report:
