UGA to remember 22 deceased students, faculty and staff at memorial service April 28

Athens, Ga. – Twenty-two University of Georgia students, faculty and staff who have died since last May will be remembered at the university’s annual candlelight memorial service April 28 at 7 p.m. at the University Chapel.

The service, called “Georgia Remembers…A Candlelight Memorial,” has been held each spring since 2000 to help the university community find comfort while honoring deceased friends, family members and colleagues.

Ten students, 11 staff and faculty members and one recent graduate will be remembered in the ceremony. Each name will be read aloud, followed by the toll of the Chapel Bell and lighting of a candle.

The names will be read by Katie Barlow, president of the Student Government Association; Bruce Hollett, chair of the University Council Executive Committee; and Stuart Ivy, president of the Staff Council. Members of the Arch Society will light candles.

The Air Force ROTC Honor Guard will present the Colors to open the ceremony and UGA President Michael F. Adams will make opening remarks and introductions. Southern Wind Quintet, a student group from the Hodgson School of Music, will play, and representatives of the Campus Ministry Association will offer opening and closing prayers.

Students whose names will be read are:

Elena Rae Shaw, incoming freshman from Sautee; Sara Beth Ward, a senior majoring in English, Lawrenceville; Jason Z. Hao, sophomore pre-business major, Atlanta; Isaias Ramos, senior majoring in genetics, Woodstock; Brian C. Butler, senior majoring in health and physical education, Commerce; Sloan E. Cleary, incoming freshman, Evans; Nathan G. Yorke, freshman, Charlotte, NC; John M. Conn Jr., a student in the School of Law, Monroe; Michael T. Roberds, senior majoring in biology, Kennesaw; and Dirk P. Magwitz, a doctoral candidate in child and family development in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, Girardeaux, Mo.

Staff and faculty whose names will be read are:

Alisha T. Davis, food services; Dora A. Williams, physical plant; Randy Linda Sturman, lecturer in religion; W. Hamilton Jordan, public service associate in the Carl Vinson Institute of Government; William B. Wheeler, Continuing Education Operating Services; Ruth S. Fleming, Continuing Education Auxiliary Services; John R. Harrell, Cooperative Extension; W. Floyd Hall, physical plant; Jeffrey L. Clemons, food services; Michael A. Johnson, Graduate School; and Diane T. Miller, Cooperative Extension.

Miley E. Duvall of Tiger, who graduated last August with bachelor’s degree in biology, also will be remembered.
