University Health Center to recognize World AIDS Day on Dec. 1

Athens, Ga. – UGA’s University Health Center (UHC) will recognize World AIDS Day on Wednesday, Dec. 1, with activities designed to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and to commemorate those who have died fighting the disease. This year’s World AIDS Day theme is “Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS.”

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. UHC’s health promotion department and UGA student volunteers will staff a table at the Tate Student Center Plaza. Information about HIV/AIDS, HIV transmission and statistics will be available along with red ribbons and free condoms. A limited number of free, anonymous HIV test certificates will be offered to participants.

Worldwide there are more 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS. Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to HIV and to the impact of AIDS. Half of all people living with HIV are female, and women are two-and-a-half times more vulnerable to HIV infection than men.
