Athens, Ga. — Weather forecasters predict the potential for freezing rain and some icing for the Athens area overnight Friday into Saturday. Campus transit has been cancelled for Saturday. Regular service is scheduled to resume on Sunday, weather permitting. Following are the university’s operating procedures when such situations occur on weekends or holidays.
The university does not normally make blanket closing announcements under our inclement weather policy on days when the University is already scheduled generally to be closed, such as weekends and holidays. Unlike a regular class-day or work-day, weekends involve special cases and a variety of circumstances in which some units may decide to proceed with regular weekend operations or special events while others may decide to close in the face of inclement weather.
Some departments have employees who are previously designated to report in weather emergencies in any case, including the police department, housing, food services, and physical plant, among others. Other departments may operate normally on weekends, such as the library, Ramsey Center, Performing Arts Center, Georgia Center, Visitors Center, athletics, and the like.
Specific departments that have normal weekend operations or special programs planned on a weekend or holiday should make their own prior arrangements with employees and participants as to how to proceed in the case of inclement weather on a day in which the University already is generally closed.
We suggest that it would be most effective to provide a telephone number that participants and employees specific to your department may call for instructions if inclement weather interferes with a planned program on a weekend or holiday. We suggest that a media announcement would be effective and advisable only for the largest scheduled events, such as cancellation of a ticketed performing arts or athletics event. Those units will handle those matters directly with the media.
