Eberhard receives top award for journalism history

Athens, Ga. – Wallace B. Eberhard, a retired University of Georgia journalism professor, has received the highest award presented by the American Journalism Historians Association.

Eberhard, professor emeritus in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, received the Sidney Kobre Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism History at the AJHA annual convention in October. The award recognizes “an exemplary record of sustained contributions to journalism history through teaching, research, professional activities or other contributions to the field of journalism history.”

Eberhard was editor of the association’s refereed journal, American Journalism, for four years. He has published numerous articles on media history and reported on his research in other venues. He initiated the first graduate seminar on media history at UGA and guided the work of a number of graduate students in this area.

A former newspaper and magazine writer, editor and publisher, Eberhard has been a national director and vice president for campus affairs for the Society of Professional Journalists, the nation’s largest professional journalism organization.
