Athens, Ga. - The School of Social Work will host its annual Parham Policy Day event on Nov. 13 at 8:30 a.m. in the Tate Student Center Reception Hall. The keynote speaker for this event will be noted policy scholar John Sibley Butler from the University of Texas at Austin. This event is free to the public.

Organized under the theme "Innovation, Social Entrepreneurship & Job Creation," the 2012 Parham Policy Day event is being coordinated by masters-level students in Parham Professor June Gary Hopps' Social Welfare Policy and the Social Work Profession course. The day will kick off with poster presentations at 8:30 a.m. The posters, to be exhibited by Hopps' students, will feature presentations on a variety of social policy-related topics.

Butler, who will speak at 9:30 a.m., is an accomplished scholar in the arena of policymaking. His mission is to educate on wealth creation in America. He seeks to bring together academia, business and world governments to help create prosperity in U.S. and abroad. He is currently a professor of management in the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also the director of the Herb Kelleher Center for Entrepreneurship and the director of the Institute for Innovation, Creativity and Capital, a research unit at University of Texas at Austin with a 30-year track record of job acceleration and wealth creation. Butler also holds the Gale Chair in Entrepreneurship and Small Business in the Graduate School of Business' management department and the Herb Kelleher chair in Entrepreneurship.

Over the previous eight summers, Butler has served as a visiting professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo and this year serves in a similar capacity at Peking University in China.

Delene Porter, a faculty member of the University of Georgia's Fanning Institute for Leadership, will make a special presentation on community development at 10:35 a.m. Porter, who earned her Master of Social Work degree from UGA in 2003, is also the CEO/President of the Athens Area Community Foundation, an initiative that grew out of OneAthens.

Parham Policy Day is an annual, daylong event coordinated by Hopps and policy students in the School of Social Work. It was started in 2003, by Hopps, to highlight the lasting positive impacts of well-crafted social policy.
