Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art will present a lecture by molecular, cellular and developmental biologist Roger Hangarter of Indiana University on March 6 at 5:30 p.m. in room S150 of the art school. His talk on “Plants: They whisper, talk and move” is free and open to the public.
On March 5, Hangarter will give lecture titled “Light regulation of actin-dependent chloroplast movements in leaf cells” at 4 p.m. in room 2401 of the Miller Plant Sciences Building. His visit to UGA is co-sponsored by the school of art and the department of plant biology, both units in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences.
Hangarter is Indiana University’s Class of 1986 Chancellor’s Professor. His collaborations with artists resulted in a national exhibition, sLowlife, a series of time-lapse movies detailing the processes and dynamics of plant life. The exhibit is window into the world of plants, according to the exhibition’s website at http://plantsinmotion.bio.indiana.edu/usbg/.
“With increasing urbanization and a world that is moving at an ever-increasing pace, we are becoming further removed from the rhythms of plants,” Hangarter said. “As a consequence, the appreciation of the importance of plants is receding in our collective consciousness to the point that for many people plants are regarded as little more than ornamental objects. This presentation [uses] time-lapse imaging to demonstrate the remarkable dynamics of plant life.”
The Lamar Dodd School of Art is located at 270 River Road; room S150 is located on the first floor of the building. The Miller Plant Sciences Building is located at 120 Carlton Street, and room 2401 is located on the second floor of the building.
