Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Lamar Dodd School of Art will host its MMXI Faculty Exhibition Aug. 19 through Sept. 14 in galleries 101 and 307 of the art school. The opening reception on Aug. 19 at 7 p.m. is free, and the public is invited to attend.
MMXI Faculty Exhibition celebrates the artists and designers on the faculty in the art school. The faculty members work in traditional media-painting, ceramics, photography, jewelry and metals, printmaking and sculpture-as well as emerging art forms and new media. The exhibition features more than 40 works created in the last three years by UGA faculty, who regularly show nationally and internationally.
The exhibition will include “With Stu,” a painting in oil and acrylic on canvas by Christopher Hocking, associate director of the art school. “The title and image directly refer to the great American modernist painter Stuart Davis,” Hocking said. “But it’s also a phonetic pun on ‘with stew,’ a mash-up of whatever one has around, a concoction chocked-full of surprises and subtleties, the best of which are slow-cook and a little suspect.”
Also included is “Lepidoptera,” a three-dimensional drawing based on the imagery and symbolism of Korean decorative arts by associate professor Imi Hwangbo, as well as black and white micrograph photography by associate professor Michael Oliveri. “I am examining unconscious aspects of society and culture in relation to science and art, connecting them through visual memory and learned aesthetics, finding the sublime where science, art, and technology converge on a primordial level,” said Oliveri, who developed the imagery in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Ultrastructural Research at UGA.
The opening of MMXI Faculty Exhibition coincides with a reception in the Georgia Museum of Art cosponsored by the Lamar Dodd School of Art and the Friends of the Georgia Museum of Art in honor of an exhibition of 100 works by Lamar Dodd, Lamar Dodd: Paintings and Drawings. This reception will be held Aug. 19 from 5 to 8 p.m. and also is open to the public. The museum is exhibiting drawings, watercolors, paintings and selections from Dodd’s sketchbooks from the late 1920s to the 1990s. The school of art was named for Dodd in 1995 in honor of his nearly 40 years of dedicated service to the university and vision for the arts in Georgia.
These two shows also coincide with a simultaneous exhibition of emeritus and former faculty from the art school at the Lyndon House Arts Center. The show will run concurrently with the faculty exhibition from Aug. 19 through Sept. 14, with an opening reception on Aug. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m.
