UGA's Corso recognized for contributions to the field of health economics

Athens, Ga. – Phaedra S. Corso, associate professor in the University of Georgia’s department of health policy and management in the College of Public Health was awarded the 2008 Kaafee Billah Memorial Award in Economics for their paper titled “Child maltreatment, youth violence and intimate partner violence: Developmental relationships.” The paper was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine in 2007.

“This study is an example of how the field of health economics and economic evaluation can contribute to improving population-level health,” Corso said. She shares the award with Dr. Xiangming Fang from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.

The Kaafee Billah Memorial Award was established to recognize outstanding scientific contributions in economic research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Named after former CDC economist, Dr. Kaafee Billah (1967-2006), this is the first CDC award to honor contributions in the field of economics.

The Kaafee Billah Memorial Award in Economics was established by the Health Economics Research Group. HERG, sponsored by the Office of the Chief Science Officer, is an organization for experts and persons interested in the fields of public health, economics, decision science, operations research, program evaluation, and health services research who are employed by the CDC/ATSDR.

The department of health policy and management presents an interdisciplinary approach to the challenges of shaping policy within the modern healthcare delivery systems and public health communities. The mission of the department is to advance the health of the public by developing leadership expertise and promoting an evidence-based approach to public and private policy making in health and medicine.
