UGA to sponsor “Freedom Breakfast” with Athens-Clarke County government and school district

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia will join the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government and the Clarke County School District in sponsoring a “Freedom Breakfast” to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday. The event – with Superior Court Judge Steve Jones as the keynote speaker – is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at the Classic Center, 300 N. Thomas St.

Tickets are $26 and can be ordered through Nov. 28 from UGA’s Office of Institutional Diversity. Keith Parker, who heads that office and is serving as cochair of the planning committee for the breakfast, said he expects a sell-out crowd so tickets should be purchased early.

Nominations also are now being solicited for a new “Fulfilling the Dream” award, which will be presented at the Freedom Breakfast to two individuals from Athens-Clarke County and two from UGA. Award recipients will be recognized for significant efforts to build bridges of unity and understanding among residents of Athens-Clarke County.

Nomination materials should include the name, address and phone number of the nominee, a description of their contributions and two letters of recommendation. Nominations must be forwarded no later than Nov. 28 to the Office of Institutional Diversity, 119 Holmes-Hunter Academic Building, Athens, GA 30602-6119.

Ticket order forms for the breakfast and selection criteria for the “Fulfilling the Dream” award can be accessed from the “Events” section of the Office of Institutional Diversity Web site (www.uga.edu/diversity) or may be obtained by calling Joan Pittman at 706/583-8195.
