ATHENS, Ga. – Alan Darvill has been named a Senior Faculty Fellow for the Foundation Fellows Program, the University of Georgia’s premier undergraduate scholarship program.
Darvill will serve a four-year term as mentor and role model to the students in the fellowship. He joins 11 other distinguished faculty members who represent an array of academic disciplines, from the humanities to the sciences.
“Our Senior Faculty Fellows are chosen from a wide variety of disciplines on the basis of their nationally recognized scholarship and their interest in undergraduate education,” said Steve Elliott-Gower, associate director of the Honors Program.
A Regents Professor of biochemistry, molecular biology and plant pathology, Darvill is co-director of UGA’s Complex Carbohydrate Research Center. He serves on the editorial board of Glycobiology and was the recipient of an Outstanding Faculty Award from the UGA chapter of Golden Key National Honor Society in 1995.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome Professor Darvill to the Foundation Fellows Program. He is one of our most distinguished researchers and will make a wonderful contribution to our program,” says Jere Morehead, vice provost for academic affairs.
Senior Faculty Fellows are assigned four to eight students, meeting with them as a group once a semester and later individually. Many Senior Faculty Fellows have previous involvement with the Foundation Fellows Program through participation in dinner seminars or travel-study programs.
