2nd Thursday Concert series to end with ‘Chamber Music for Piano and Strings’

The Hugh Hodgson School of Music’s 2nd Thursday Scholarship Concert series will close its 2014 season with “Chamber Music for Piano and Strings” on April 10 at 8 p.m. in Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall.

The concert will feature UGA faculty members Levon Ambartsumian (violin), David Starkweather (cello) and Evgeny Rivkin (piano) in a performance of Tchaikovsky’s “Piano Trio in A minor.” The evening also will include Robert Schumann’s “Piano Quintet in E-flat major” with string instructors Shakhida Azimkhodjaeva (violin) and Ruth Monson (viola).

“Both entries on the program are large-scale Romantic works with truly lovely melodies,” said Starkweather, cello professor at the Hodgson School since 1983. “Each runs the gamut of emotions, from exuberant to funereal.”

Tchaikovsky’s piano trio is notable as his only composition for the genre’s piano-violin-cello combination. Similarly, Schumann only wrote one piano quintet, the first of its kind, combining the string quartet with piano.

Tickets for the concert are $18, $5 for UGA students. They are available at the Performing Arts Center box office, by calling 706-542-4400 or online at

Established in 1980, the 2nd Thursday Scholarship Series offers showcase performances by UGA students and faculty the second Thursday of each month throughout the academic year. Proceeds from individual ticket sales and season subscriptions help fund yearlong academic scholarships and assistantships for students and present donors the opportunity to sponsor individual students of the music school at several levels of giving.
