Elmer Gray, Extension research professional in entomology, shared tips with Southern Living about how to keep black flies away.
“Black flies are stout-bodied flies that are closely related to mosquitoes,” Gray said.
The species that bite tend to be found up north, while the species found in the South tend to be more of a swarming nuisance.
To keep the flies away, Gray recommends using repellants on exposed skin and wearing loose, light-colored long sleeves and pants while outdoors.
