UGA professor available to comment on American Broadcasting Companies, Inc. v. Aereo, Inc.

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication has a journalism professor, Kent Middleton, available to comment on the American Broadcasting Companies Inc. v. Aereo, Inc. case decided by the U.S. Supreme Court June 25.

In the decision, the Supreme Court voted 6-3 to block Aereo, an Internet streaming service that rebroadcasts live programs to subscribers without paying retransmission fees. The decision is a victory for the nation’s major TV networks and cable companies, many of which were opposed to the service.

Middleton teaches communication law to undergraduate and graduate students and is co-author of the textbook “The Law of Public Communication.” He has written numerous articles on privacy, copyright, advertising and other communication law subjects. Middleton, who has taught at UGA since 1980, was a reporter and editor of newspapers in Buffalo, New York, Detroit and Minneapolis. He is a member of the board of directors of the Red and Black Publishing Co. and a founding director of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation. He is the former head of the law division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. He has a doctorate in journalism and mass communication from the University of Minnesota where he majored in communication law.
