Tina McElroy Ansa, author of four novels including Baby of the Family and Ugly Ways, has been chosen as the 2005 recipient of the Stanley W. Lindberg Award, named in honor of the late, long-time editor of the Georgia Review.
The Lindberg Award is presented once every two years to a person who has contributed substantially to the literary culture of the state of Georgia through a lifetime of significant accomplishment. The award has been given previously to novelist Pat Conroy, writer/critic Marion Montgomery of Crawford and Bettie M. Sellers, former poet laureate.
A native of Macon and graduate of Spelman College, Ansa is a former journalist in the South and Northeast, and in 1971 she became the first black woman to work in the newsroom of the Atlanta Constitution. Ansa was chosen from among nominees presented to the board of directors of the Stanley W. Lindberg Award, chaired by Judy Long, editor-in-chief of Hill Street Press.
Ansa, who lives on St. Simons Island, will receive the award in a ceremony on April 16 at 7 p.m. at the Georgia Center. The black-tie event is open to the public, and tickets are $40. The deadline for reservations is April 11. For more information, call 542-2134.
