In response to the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture conference that will be hosted by UGA’s School of Environmental Design, the Circle Gallery is presenting the exhibit “Places/Non-places.”
The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 21-Oct. 19. An opening reception in conjunction with the exhibit will be held Sept. 21 from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
The theme of the CELA 2005 conference is “A Sense of Place.”
For this exhibit, two different artists, each related to the university through the College of Environment and Design, took the challenge to interpret the theme “Places/Non-places” through their own individual artistic method of choice. To do this, the question was raised: How would “places and non-places” be interpreted by different artists working in different media?
Now a full-time landscape painter, Philip Juras received his master of landscape architecture degree from UGA in 1997 and a bachelor of fine arts degree from the university in 1990.
René D. Shoemaker has been creating art in Athens for more than 20 years. She received her bachelor of fine arts degree from UGA and a master of library and information science degree from the University of South Carolina. Currently, Shoemaker is librarian and director of the Owens Library and the director of the Circle Gallery at UGA’s College of Environment and Design.
