Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of the Humane Society of the United States, will give a lecture entitled “Celebrating Animals, Confronting Cruelty” at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Chapel. The lecture is sponsored by the UGA chapter of Speak Out for Species (uga.edu/sos).
Pacelle will discuss the state of the animal protection movement in the U.S. He will discuss the contradictory attitudes that characterize modern-day relationships with animals, including the remarkable bonds forged with animals, but also the myriad forms of mistreatment. He will argue for a new ethic as a matter of personal responsibility and public standards in the care of animals.
Pacelle has directed more than 15 successful statewide ballot campaigns to protect animals and worked to pass a host of state and federal animal protection laws. His work on animal issues has been featured in newspapers and magazines, and he has appeared on almost all of the major network television programs.
The Humane Society of the U.S. has worked since 1954 to promote the protection of all animals. The mission of the HSUS is to create a humane and sustainable world for animals through education, advocacy and the promotion of respect and compassion for all creatures.
HSUS recently had a lead role in the largest pet-rescue operation in U.S. history in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
