A speech by former U.N. Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young will highlight the university’s observance of Black History Month. Young is the guest speaker for the NAACP Image Awards Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Tate Student Center.
This year’s theme, “From Slavery to Freedom,” is reflected in several programs sponsored by organizations on and off campus. The month holds special significance to LaRetha Spain-Shuler, associate director of the African-American Cultural Center. “First and foremost, this is a way to recognize and celebrate the contributions African Americans have made,” she said. “It’s also a way to educate everyone about contributions that African Americans are still making today.”
