Senior Kara Lynn Joyce was named Swimmer of the Year following the recent conclusion of the NCAA championships. This is the second consecutive year Joyce has been honored with this recognition.
Joyce was crowned champion in the 50 and 100 freestyle events for the fourth consecutive year. Her time in the 100 free of 47.24 seconds not only set a new pool record at the University Aquatic Center, but it also moved her ahead of Maritza Correia for the fastest time in UGA history. With 18 national titles, Joyce becomes the second most decorated swimmer in NCAA history just one shy of Stanford’s Jenny Thompson.
In addition, Joyce joins California’s Natalie Coughlin as only the second swimmer in NCAA women’s history to win four consecutive titles in two events.
