A forward-looking article in the Hindustan Times in India, asked a number of experts including UGA’s Anupam Srivastava, director of the Asia Program at the Center for International Trade and Security and adjunct faculty at the School of Public and International Affairs, about the likelihood of the Indian government negotiating a deal with future U.S. administrations to enhance a peaceful nuclear program.
Srivastava, a nonproliferation expert, said he expects the American nonproliferation lobby to make any nuclear deal a hard sell.
“They will delay and insert amendments and conditionalities that would be considered clearly unacceptable by the Indian nuclear scientists, foreign policy establishments and the government,” he said. “India should bury expectations for a similar deal from a Democratic administration.”
