Steven Heller, the award-winning author of many books and articles on the history of illustration, will deliver the 10th annual Jack Davis Visiting Artist Lecture March 7 at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the Student Learning Center.
Open free to the public, the lecture is sponsored by the Lamar Dodd School of Art.
Heller was for 33 years an art director at The New York Times, originally on the OpEd page and for almost 30 of those years with the New York Times Book Review. Currently, he is co-chair of the MFA Designer as Author Department at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, special consultant to the president of SVA for New Programs and writes the Visuals column for The New York Times Book Review.
In addition to Heller’s lecture, there will be a panel discussion on humorous illustration March 6, also at 5:30 p.m. in Room 102 of the Student Learning Center. It is also open free to the public.
Those taking part in the panel include Heller; Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution; famed cartoonist Arnold Roth; Anita Kunz, critically acclaimed painter, sculptor and illustrator; C.F. Payne, whose work has graced Time, Rolling Stone, Esquire; and lecture namesake Jack Davis, artist and illustrator known to generations for his work in MAD magazine and many other places.
