Prepare emergency supplies for later
With hurricane season in full swing, UGA experts suggest having a three-day emergency food supply on hand.
“Flash floods, tropical storms, blizzards, whatever the disaster, it pays to be prepared,” said Elizabeth Andress, a food safety specialist with UGA Cooperative Extension.
Select foods that are nonperishable and require no refrigeration, little or no cooking and little or no water.
Include ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables. Select containers that can be used in one meal or a snack, since you most likely won’t be able to refrigerate leftovers.
Add canned juices, soups and canned or powdered milk. Supply enough liquids so each family member has at least one gallon to drink per day.
Include staple foods, like sugar, salt, pepper and high energy foods like peanut butter, jelly, crackers, granola bars and trail mix. Also keep in mind special food items for infants or elderly family members.
Make sure to include a hand-operated can opener, scissors and a knife for opening foods. Add disposable plates, cups and utensils, too.
Be sure to date items and place your emergency supply items together in a box and store it above floor level in a cool, dry place.
