Gov. Sonny Perdue has appointed two UGA alumni to the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. Frederick E. Cooper of Atlanta has been appointed to represent the 5th Congressional District, and Larry Walker of Perry has been appointed a member at large.
The governor also appointed Larry R. Ellis, chief executive of Ellis Services and Solutions Enterprises in Atlanta, to an at-large post on the board.
Each appointee, whose term began Aug. 7, will serve a seven-year term on the board.
A 1967 graduate of the UGA School of Law, Cooper earned his bachelor’s degree from Washington and Lee University. He is chairman of Cooper Capital LLC, a private investment firm he founded in 1998. Cooper is a member of the boards of trustees of the Georgia Research Alliance, Washington and Lee University, and the Arch Foundation for the University of Georgia. He chaired the G8 Summit Host Committee for the G8 Summit held in 2004 in Sea Island and has served on the boards of the Georgia State Chamber of Commerce and the Metropolitan Atlanta Chamber.
An attorney with the law firm of Walker, Hulbert, Gray and Byrd, Walker earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and a law degree from UGA in 1964 and 1965, respectively. A member of the Georgia General Assembly for more than 30 years, Walker served as administration floor leader for Gov. Joe Frank Harris and as majority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1986-2002. Walker also served as chairman of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation for four years. He has served on the Georgia Department of Transportation Board, representing the 8th Congressional District.
