A Georgia civil rights icon will speak at the seventh annual Freedom Breakfast, honoring the life and work of the late Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 15 in Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center.
Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore, retired Superior Court Judge of the Fulton County Atlanta Judicial Circuit, will speak on “The Power of the Dream. . . Where Do We Go from Here?” at the event, which is sponsored by UGA and the Athens-Clarke County government and school district.
“I will carry out this year’s theme in my talk, but while we are looking forward, I certainly concur with the quote that those who would forget their history are doomed to repeat it,” Moore said. “I do believe we have to look backward to move forward and that would be the basis of what I would like to speak about.”
Moore is both an advocate for civil rights and an example of its momentum. She has the distinction of being the first African-American woman to serve on the benches of the Atlanta Municipal Court, the City Court of Atlanta and on any superior court in Georgia.
“We could not ask for a better keynote speaker for the Freedom Breakfast than Thelma Moore. She embodies both the spirit of
Dr. King’s dream and the hard work required to make it a reality,” said Cheryl Dozier, UGA’s assistant provost for institutional diversity. “Her commitment to civil rights echoes our theme.”
In addition to the keynote address, recipients of the President’s Fulfilling the Dream Awards also will be announced.
Tickets to the breakfast are $18 each or $144 for a table of eight. They can be purchased from the Office of Institutional Diversity at (706) 583-8195. No tickets will be sold the day of the event. Seating is limited.
