The history department will hold the inaugural Amanda and Greg Gregory Visiting Lecture on Oct. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Chapel.
Victoria Bynum, professor emerita of history at Texas State University-San Marcos, will present a lecture entitled, “Southern Dissent and Outrage: Community, Race and Kinship in the Civil War Era.”
The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow in Room 100 of Old College.
Bynum’s research focuses on fringe groups such as Southern Unionists and mixed race couples living in the South during the Civil War.
Her lecture will trace the development of her most recent book, The Long Shadow of the Civil War: Southern Dissent and its Legacies.
Made possible by Amanda and Henry D. “Greg” Gregory Jr. of Atlanta, the Gregory Visiting Lecture brings a prominent historian to UGA to conduct special seminars with students and to deliver a public lecture.
