The Southeast chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians will hold its 30th annual meeting at the Classic Center from Oct. 18-20. Approximately 55 papers will be presented in the 15 paper sessions offered. Mark Reinberger, a professor in the College of Environment and Design, is serving as conference chair for 2012.
The conference’s keynote lecture will be given Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. in the auditorium of the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries. Richard Guy Wilson, Commonwealth Professor and chair of the architectural history department at the University of Virginia, will discuss “Edith Wharton’s Architectural and Literary Revolution,” the subject of a new book. The lecture, which is open free to the public, will be followed by a reception in the Founders Memorial Garden.
As part of the conference, the new documentary Unfinished Spaces, about the National Art Schools of Cuba, will be shown at Ciné on Oct. 19 from 4:30-6 p.m. The screening is $10, free to conference attendees.
On Oct. 20, Danny Sniff of the University Architects Office will lead a tour of notable, modern UGA buildings. That afternoon, conference attendees will travel to Madison for a tour of selected ante- and post-bellum buildings. The cost of the tour is $40.
