Twelve UGA faculty, staff and students who died since last April will be honored at the university’s annual candlelight memorial service April 30 at 7 p.m. on the steps of the Chapel.
UGA President Michael F. Adams will lead the service, “Georgia Remembers … a Candlelight Memorial.” Names of each of the five students and seven faculty and staff members will be read aloud, followed by a toll of the Chapel bell and the lighting of a candle.
Names will be read by Nelson Hilton, chair of the executive committee of University Council; Jerry Daniel, chair of the Staff Council; and Austin Laufersweiler, president of the Student Government Association.
Members of the university’s Arch Society will light candles as each name is read aloud.
Alison Wilbur Eskildsen, minister for the Universalist Unitarian Fellowship of Athens, will deliver an opening prayer, and Andy Cooke, campus minister for the Presbyterian Student Center, will deliver a closing prayer.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, the flames from the Arch Society’s members’ candles will be passed to attendees so they can light their own candles of remembrance.
Faculty and staff whose names will be read are: Byron L. Candole, a laboratory manager in plant pathology in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Dianne H. Crutchfield, a building services worker at 4-H and Youth-Cooperative Extension; Ted Dyer, a public service assistant in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Dale C. Gibson, a disability specialist in the Disability Resource Center; Douglas Keith Hamm, a laboratory animal care technician in the College of Veterinary Medicine; Evan Andrew Lilly, an application analyst associate in the College of Veterinary Medicine; and Robert Bruce Hollett, an associate professor in the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Students whose names will be read are: Quinton Million Ayers, a junior sport management major from Adairsville; Joseph Frederick Kessie, a junior biological science major from Ty Ty; Alexandra Rose Misner, a junior mass media arts major from Alpharetta; David Neal Symons, a doctoral student in music education from Evans; and Anna Elizabeth Walls, a freshman journalism major from Alpharetta.
