The 2013-2014 Georgia Workshop on Culture, Power and History series, “Religious and Secular Meanings,” begins this month.
Supported by the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts and the religion department in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the series will consist of five sessions that each will be held from 3:30-5 p.m. in Room 114 of Baldwin Hall.
On Oct. 11 Emory University’s Frank Lechner will discuss “Religion and American Exceptionalism: Notes on Identity Change.” UGA’s Matthew May will discuss “A Change of Heart: The Effect of Religious Participation on Mental and Physical Health among the recently Re-committed” on Oct. 18. Geneviève Zubrzycki from the University of Michigan will discuss “Nationalism, Secularism and Cultural Heritage in Quebec: From ‘Reasonable Accommodation’ to the Charter of Values” on Dec. 6.
In addition, Elaine Howard Ecklund from Rice University will discuss “Religion and Science: Individuals’ Interpretations of Competing Belief Systems” and UGA’s David Smilde will discuss “Sacred and Secular in Venezuelan Socialism.” The dates for these two workshops will be announced after they are finalized.
