The University Health Center and its Counseling and Psychiatric Services department will host a seminar March 27 about working with veterans on college campuses.
The seminar, “University Counseling Center Core Competency,” will feature Paula Domenici and Anthony McCormick, who are psychologists from the Center for Deployment Psychology in Bethesda, Md.
The seminar will explore the culture and experiences of veterans on campus and the effects of deployment on these students. The seminar also will provide basic information about evidence-based treatments for addressing post-traumatic stress disorder and other clinical concerns in this population.
“With the rise of veterans returning to pursue degrees at institutions of higher education, it is important for mental health providers and other student affairs professionals to understand the concerns, challenges and experiences of these individuals,” said Dr. Jean Chin, executive director of the UHC.
The seminar is considered to be a generalist program, and attendance is open to all student affairs professionals from UGA and other institutions of higher education. The fee to attend the seminar is $60 for licensed professional counselors, social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists and physicians who want to earn six continuing education credits; it is $10 for everyone else.
