UGA will celebrate outstanding students, faculty, staff and alumni at several events during Honors Week, April 7-12.
The tradition of Honors Week dates back to the 1930s, when UGA Chancellor S.V. Sanford set aside a day to recognize outstanding students. In 2011, Honors Day was expanded to a full week to accommodate the numerous events that occur in schools, colleges and other campus units.
“Honors Week is one of the many ways that we recognize that the strength of this institution lies in its people-the students, faculty, staff and alumni who excel in their academic pursuits,” said Pamela Whitten, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.
Public events during Honors Week include the Public Service and Outreach Meeting and Awards Luncheon and the 2014 UGA Alumni Awards Luncheon.
Unless otherwise noted, other Honors Week events are by invitation only.
Two recognition programs will take place April 7. The 23rd annual Public Service and Outreach Meeting and Awards Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Georgia Center.
The program is open to the public, but registration is required at http://www.georgiacenter.uga.edu/uga-hotel/conferences-events/register/annual-public-service-outreach-meeting. Gov. Nathan Deal will deliver the keynote address, “Georgia’s Economic Future and How UGA Can Help Make it Brighter,” at 3 p.m. in Mahler Hall.
The Faculty Recognition Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. in Mahler Auditorium of the Georgia Center. Sponsored by the senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, the event will recognize the winners of this year’s awards for teaching excellence, including the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professorships and the Richard B. Russell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching as well as faculty, staff and graduate students who will be honored for teaching and advising.
Three events will be held April 9. The Terry College of Business will hold its Honors Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. in the Chapel. Graduate and undergraduate recipients of named scholarships and departmental awards will be honored as well as inductees to Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society.
The Presidential Honors Day Luncheon will take place at noon in Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center. The event will honor recipients of national and international scholarships; first honor graduates; the UGA Award for Excellence; the Student Government Association president, vice president and treasurer; and outstanding students in their final year of study from each of the colleges and schools.
The Honors Program Banquet will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Athena Ballroom of the Classic Center. The event will recognize Honors Program students who have graduated in the summer or fall of 2013 as well as the graduating class of May 2014. The Lothar Tresp and Hatten Howard Outstanding Professor Awards as well as the Jere W. Morehead Award to an exceptional friend of the Honors Program will be presented.
On April 10, the UGA Research Foundation will hold its 35th annual Research Awards Banquet in Mahler Hall of the Georgia Center. The event will recognize winners of Creative Research Awards and Medals, the Michael F. Adams Early Career Scholars, the Inventor’s Award, the Georgia BioBusiness Academic Entrepreneur of the Year Award as well as Distinguished Research Professors and postdoctoral and graduate student award recipients.
Two ceremonies will be held April 11. The 2014 UGA Alumni Awards Luncheon will take place at the Classic Center. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m., and the luncheon follows at noon. The lunch is open to the public, but registration is required at http://www.alumni.uga.edu/. The UGA Alumni Association will present the 2014 Faculty Service, Alumni Family of the Year and Alumni Merit awards. M. Douglas Ivester and Charlayne Hunter-Gault will be honored with the Alumni Merit Award, Tom Landrum and Anne Sweaney will be honored with the Faculty Service Award and Francis “Abit” Massey and his family will receive the Alumni Family of the Year Award.
The Circle of Honor Induction Ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in Grand Hall of the Tate Student Center. Former football All-American Pat Dye, former Honda Award tennis player Marissa Catlin and NCAA national champion gymnast Lori Strong will be inducted into the UGA Athletic Association Circle of Honor. Also being honored are Bill Hartman Award winner David Boyd and Circle of Distinction inductees John and Alice Sands.
The College of Engineering’s Celebration of Excellence will be held April 12 at 6 p.m. in the Magnolia Ballroom of the Georgia Center. The inaugural dinner and awards program will recognize the outstanding achievements of faculty, staff and students in the engineering college.
In addition to the recognition programs, the CURO Symposium Poster Display will hang in the atrium (third level) of the Tate Student Center April 7-12. The Division of Student Affairs will sponsor a public display of posters from the 2014 CURO Symposium. The featured posters will be displayed on the Tate Student Center Art Wall during Honors Week to recognize students’ research achievements.
