Perhaps vinegar isn’t the best bait for catching flies, as the old saying goes, but it has plenty of household uses, according to Michael Doyle, director of UGA’s Center for Food Safety.
Doyle was quoted in a Time article about “10 Unexpected Uses for Vinegar”; the article first appeared in Real Simple magazine.
“Vinegar is a strong preservative because its acetic acid kills the microbes and bacteria that could cause food to spoil,” Doyle said. “It’s also a good deodorizer-the acid neutralizes basic compounds, such as those found in degrading meat, that can be volatile and unpleasant.”
