Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia department of theatre and film studies will launch a camp for high school students this summer. The DramaDawgs Summer Theatre Camp will be held July 10-17 and will offer students in grades 9 – 12 an intensive opportunity to expand their training in acting.Students will take master classes in performance, scene study, characterization and acting on camera from UGA faculty. The week of classes will culminate with public performances by students.
The new summer program is sponsored by UGA’s nationally recognized department of theatre and film studies, which is accredited by the National Association for Schools of Theatre. In addition to its undergraduate theatre major, UGA offers the state of Georgia’s only Masters of Fine Arts degree in acting, as well as M.F.A. programs in design and dramatic media, and a Ph.D. in theatre history and theory.
Students attending DramaDawgs will have the option to experience college life by living on campus in a UGA residential hall and eating in the university’s dining halls. Students who choose not to stay in the residence halls may opt to attend as a day camper and receive only lunch.
The cost for day campers is $399, which includes tuition and lunch, and the fee for residence hall campers is $599, which includes the tuition fee plus housing, food and activities. Spaces are limited, and early registration is encouraged. Students and parents must submit an application, short essay, consent form, health form and an application fee/deposit of $20. Reservations will be taken until June 13.
The director of the program is associate professor George Contini, who specializes in characterization, solo performance and acting on camera.Contini maintains a career in professional theatre and has performed at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, the Horizon Theatre, and, most recently, the New Orleans Fringe Festival, where he performed his one-man show, Put It In the Scrapbook. Past students of his have been seen in such shows as “Better Off Ted,” “30 Rock,” “The Forgotten,” “One Tree Hill,” “The Walking Dead,” and in commercials for AOL, McDonald’sand Del Monte. Contini has been recognized for his outstanding teaching and research at UGA, where he has received the Richard Russell Award, Sandy Beaver Teaching Professorship, M. G. Michael Award, and Sandy Beaver Special Teaching Award.
