Athens, Ga. – Nominations are open for the Delta Prize for Global Understanding. The Delta Prize, endowed in 1997 by the Delta Air Lines Foundation and administered by the University of Georgia, is awarded to individuals who by their own initiative have provided opportunities for greater understanding among cultures and nations.
The prize recognizes contributions to peace and cooperation, such as grassroots projects that diminish hostilities in a particular region of the world, international programs that improve relations among different peoples, and leadership in the solution of global or regional conflict.
Since its creation in 1999, the prize has been awarded to Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter and The Carter Center, Desmond Tutu, Mikhail Gorbachev, Sadako Ogata, Václav Havel, Gertrude Mongella, Ted Turner, Nelson Mandela, Martti Ahtisaari and Mohamed ElBaradei.
University of Georgia students are integral to the selection process. A UGA student committee researches the nominations and submits their recommendations to the Delta Prize Board. The Delta Prize Board, composed of intellectual, political, and business leaders from around the world, selects the recipient.
The selection process follows an eighteen-month cycle. The deadline for nominations for the 2013 award is September 1, 2011.
