Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia horticulture professor Allan Armitage has developed an online certificate course on sun perennials. The course, titled Armitage’s Herbaceous Perennials for the Sun, is available now through the UGA Center for Continuing Education.
Armitage is founder of the UGA Trial Gardens and considered one of the world’s leading experts on perennials.
The self-paced, self-study course concentrates on Armitage’s selection of 20 perennials for sunny gardens. The program includes audio clips, interactive exercises and end-of-lesson quizzes that provide instant feedback. Armitage offers insight on how to plant, propagate and care for his favorite perennials, describing each plant’s origin, characteristics, bloom time, flower structure and optimum growing conditions.
“This course will appeal to gardeners at all levels, from first-time homeowners to experienced garden center employees,” said Pamela Bracken, department head of special projects and curriculum development at the Georgia Center. “Dr. A. is opinionated and does not pull any punches, and he delivers quality information in a unique and entertaining style.
According to Armitage, “If you are going to spend money, you might as well purchase quality plants.” Regarding the course, Armitage said, “It will be challenging but we will have a fun.”
