Dan Suiter, professor of urban entomology and Extension entomologist in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, spoke with HGTV about the best ways to get rid of termites.
Suiter first recommended that homeowners inspect their homes once a year, during the warmest part of the year. Subterranean and drywood termites are problems for homeowners in the Southeast due to its welcoming climate.
To find subterranean termites, Suiter told homeowners to start at the foundation and look for mud tunnels.
“If you’re on a crawlspace, grab a flashlight and get down in there,” he said. “Pay close attention to every place that concrete meets wood and any areas of moisture.” The dirt-filled area under a raised porch is also a common hotspot for termites.
Homes with slab construction should have their exterior walls inspected as this location is often a point of entry. Subterranean termites can also enter homes where pipes penetrate the slab.
For drywood termites, Suiter recommended inspecting the attic and beams in the upper portions of the home.
“Fecal pellets are the big thing you’re looking for here,” Suiter said.
They can be found on framing members and on top of insulation. It is less likely for homeowners to see wings with the drywood species as their colonies are much smaller than those of subterranean termites.
Homeowners should almost always hire a professional to handle a termite infestation.
“Online stores will sell you the gallons of product you need, but they won’t sell you the equipment to apply it properly,” Suiter said.
For homeowners who may be debating whether to hire a pest control professional or attempt the extermination themselves, Suiter has one piece of advice: if the infestation is associated with the main house, don’t do it yourself.
“It all comes down to what you’re trying to protect,” said Suiter. “Your home is the largest investment in your life.”
When hiring a professional pest control service, it is important to know who you hire, what you’re getting and other options. Suiter recommended getting three estimates to ensure you are receiving the best and most cost-efficient treatment.
