Athens, Ga. – About 2,700 University of Georgia students will be eligible to receive degrees at UGA’s fall semester commencement ceremonies Dec. 15 in Stegeman Coliseum.
Some 2,200 seniors will be eligible to participate in the ceremony for undergraduates at 9:30 a.m. Thomas Dyer, emeritus University Professor of history and higher education who was a faculty member for 37 years and served as vice president for instruction, will be the speaker.
About 500 candidates for master’s, doctoral and specialist in education degrees are eligible to participate in the graduate ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Richard Meagher, Distinguished Research Professor of genetics and an international authority on use of genetically engineered plants to remove pollutants from soil and water, will speak.
The student speaker for the undergraduate ceremony will be Kevin Scott of Kennesaw. Scott is executive director of UGA HERO, which raises money and conducts programs to help children with HIV/AIDS. With some 1,500 student members, HERO is the largest student philanthropic organization at UGA and was chosen 2007 Student Organization of the Year.
Also during the undergraduate ceremony eight students will be recognized as First Honor Graduates for having maintained a perfect 4.0 grade point average at UGA. They are Heather Bailey, Sugar Valley; Ramona Burada, Brasov, Romania; John Gocke III, Roswell; Amanda Kelly, Lilburn; Lindsay Morrison, Kennesaw; John Rodriguez-Feo III, Fairhope, AL; Qiansha Tang, Duluth; and Kelsey Todd, Alpharetta.
Both the undergraduate and graduate ceremonies will be broadcast live on UGA’s cable television station, channel 15 on the Charter cable system, and also will be streamed in a webcast accessible via a link on UGA’s Web home page, www.uga.edu.
