After nine months of restrictions, Congress passed an omnibus appropriations bill in January allowing for funding of political science research through the National Science Foundation.
The bill removes the language sponsored in 2013 by Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, which had barred federal funding of political science research through the NSF unless the research aided U.S. economic or national security interests.
Coburn had said the political science funding should not be a priority at a time when Congress was seeking to trim the budget.
