Dee Warmath, associate professor and Leadership Fellow for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, recently spoke with Forbes about the best “buy it for life” products.
These items can last the life of the owner or the accepted life of the product, or they might come with an ironclad warranty. Although these products can be more expensive, consumers might want to invest in them to buy less over time, or to pass something they love on to their children.
According to Warmath, the designation might just be a rebranding.
“Now you’ve got Buy It For Life products, or as our grandparents called it, ‘products.’ Buy It For Life only makes sense because of where manufacturing has gone and a newer throw-it-away mentality,” she said.
Before consumers invest, they should consider what they’ll actually use and the product category.
“Lives change, needs change. So, I think [consumers need to] have the answer on the back end of, ‘What do I do when this Buy It For Life product that I have is no longer something that fits how I’m living?’” said Warmath.
