Associate professor talks drinks to avoid on an empty stomach

Tracey Brigman, registered dietitian and clinical associate professor in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences’ department of nutritional sciences, shared with DailyMail.com drinks to avoid on an empty stomach.

According to experts, caffeine can cause the stomach to produce more acid, leading to reflux symptoms such as heartburn, nausea, chronic coughing, bad breath and bloating.

“Caffeine will be absorbed faster in an empty stomach, which could intensify any uncomfortable effects,” Brigman said.

To prevent issues, coffee lovers can have a small, high protein snack before drinking caffeine.

Carbonated drinks can also cause an upset stomach. According to Brigman, they can immediately cause “bloating and discomfort.”
