Marshall Shepherd, Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor and director of the Atmospheric Sciences Program, received $50,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service to examine the role of weather and climate in the 2016 Appalachian fire outbreak.
The project will involve a climatological study using historical data to examine changes in the probability of extreme droughts in conjunction with strong weather fronts. This historical perspective will be combined with climate modeling data to provide insight into potential future conditions.
