Service-learning program
The Office of Service-Learning will hold a lunch-and-learn program from noon-1 p.m. Oct. 2 in the conference room at Instructional Plaza North. The program will feature the presentation, “Testing the Waters: Community-Based Research to Reduce the Risks of Contaminated Seafood in Glynn County” by Lisa Liguori, a public service faculty member in Marine Extension.

Liguori’s current research encompasses fisheries anthropology, toxicology, ecology, and environmental and social justice.

The presentation describes a study in which students and commercial crabbers worked with UGA extension agents to test local blue crabs for PCBs and mercury. Through service-learning, high school students are learning how to reduce risks for their families and helping to spread the word with innovative outreach tools.

More information on this and other lunch-and-learn programs is available online at www.servicelearning.uga.edu or by calling (706) 542-8924.

CERT class
The first UGA Community Emergency Response Team class will begin Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. in the room 275 of Miller Learning Center.

The UGA CERT program is an extension of the Athens-Clarke County CERT concept, which provides training on basic disaster medical operations, fire safety, light search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism preparedness, disaster organizational skills and an exercise component that will allow participants to practice the skills learned in the program.

The objective of the nine-week program is to create a cadre of well-informed, responsible individuals who will be able to utilize the skills learned in the CERT program to assist other faculty, staff and students on campus as well as their families during emergencies. In addition, UGA CERT participants will be used in campus and community drills and to assist in campuswide efforts to promote a culture of disaster preparedness.

The program is free and open to all interested faculty, staff and students. The class is limited to 25 participants who must attend each 2.5-hour class session to complete the program. In addition, UGA CERT program graduates will receive a backpack containing emergency preparedness equipment and an invitation to a formal graduation dinner as a part of the grant-funded program. A background check is a requirement to participate in the program. Additional details, class dates and the registration information and link may be found at www.osep.uga.edu/CERT/.

Fulbright class
“Global Certificate Program: The Fulbright Experience,” a new course for faculty and staff interested in learning more about the Fulbright program, showcases a panel of recent Fulbright scholars and professionals, offering insight and advice.

The class runs from 9-11 a.m. Oct. 16 at the Training and Development Center. To register, go to Human Resources Web site at www.hr.uga.edu and click on the “Training Schedule” link. Registration begins after Oct. 3.

Speakers will discuss the application process and their own Fulbright experiences, providing tips that are unavailable through other channels. For more information, contact Adrianna Horne at (706) 425-2946 or adrianna@uga.edu.

Museum closing
The Georgia Museum of Art will close its gallery spaces to the public from Nov. 3 until early 2011 for extensive expansion and remodeling. The rest of the museum will remain open through the end of 2008 for rentals, educational events and shopping, and the museum will continue to organize events and exhibitions off-site during the closure.

A calendar of events, all of which are free and open to the public unless otherwise specified, can be found on the GMOA Web site (www.uga.edu/gamuseum), along with details about the current exhibitions, membership information and a more extensive explanation of Phase II of the museum.

Journal subscriptions
Because of the current budget situation, the University Libraries are planning for a reduction in expenditures for journal subscriptions.

Librarians have been working for several weeks preparing a list of subscriptions totaling $1.66 million that might be canceled. They have looked at actual use, how often a journal is cited by UGA authors, cost per use, overall cost and how each title supports research and teaching at the university. This list represents a reduction of up to 21 percent of expenditures for subscriptions.

Faculty, staff and students can review the list and provide comments online at http://journals.galib.uga.edu/. Link to a comment form by clicking on a specific title. Comments will be used to prioritize the list in the event that some additional funding is available.

Submit comments to the site by Oct. 17. Cancellations would take effect with issues published in 2009.
