Brigham Young University paid the brother of a Republican congressman about $70,000 to lobby on its behalf in Washington, D.C., the Associated Press reported. Joseph Cannon, brother of Rep. Christopher Cannon, has urged his brother to act on collegiate matters at least twice since receiving money from the Utah university with Mormon ties.
Rep. Cannon endorsed a BYU-supported bill to exempt religious colleges from certain accreditation guidelines including discrimination against gay students and faculty, reportedly at his brother’s urging. Both brothers are BYU alumni.
