Athens, Ga. – The dedication ceremony for the newly renovated Stegeman Coliseum will take place Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 4 p.m. in the arena’s North Concourse.
The home of Georgia’s basketball and gymnastics teams-and the venue for several other events-recently underwent the most significant renovation and upgrade to the concourses and the public support spaces in the building’s history.
“We could not be happier with the improvements made to Stegeman Coliseum,” said Georgia Director of Athletics Greg McGarity. “It’s everything our staff, our student-athletes and our fans dreamed it would be. These improvements will enhance the overall spectator experience, making it an even more exciting venue for our teams. It’s been rewarding to see all the plans come to fruition. We’ve maintained the integrity and uniqueness of the exterior while giving it a more modern feel on the inside.”
Scheduled to participate in the ceremony are UGA President Michael F. Adams, McGarity, women’s basketball coach Andy Landers, sophomore gymnast Christa Tanella and former men’s basketball co-captain Donald Hartry (1983-86). The gymnastics and women’s basketball teams also will be on hand.
The $13 million renovation project at Stegeman Coliseum included:
• Expanded concourse and lobby space to allow better mobility for spectators.
• Modernization and addition of restrooms.
• Upgrades to concessions areas.
• A new ticket sales area.
• New graphics highlighting academic and athletic success.
• New way finding signage.
• A new merchandising area.
• A first aid room.
The arena opened in 1964 as the Georgia Coliseum and it was renamed in 1996 in memory of former AD and basketball coach Herman J. Stegeman. The seating bowl has undergone several renovations to reach its current capacity of 10,523. The $30 million practice and training facility opened adjacent to Stegeman Coliseum in 2007.
In addition to basketball and gymnastics, Stegeman Coliseum hosts UGA and local high school graduations, university classes, concerts and various other events. In 1996, Stegeman Coliseum was utilized for volleyball and rhythmic gymnastics during the Centennial Olympic Games. For further information on Stegeman Coliseum, see
