UGA College of Pharmacy to hold Substances of Abuse Seminar 2014

Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia College of Pharmacy will hold its Substances of Abuse Seminar 2014 on Oct. 31 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. in Pharmacy South. The seminar will focus on the changing landscape of substance abuse.

The seminar will discuss evolving issues—such as medical marijuana legalization and illicit and prescription drug abuse—and provide the most current information about common substances of abuse, patterns of use, methods of drug testing, pharmacology and toxicology as well as treatment for overdose, addiction and dependence.

In 2012, an estimated 22.2 million Americans ages 12 years and older struggled with illicit drug or alcohol dependence or abuse.

The Substances of Abuse Seminar 2014 is open to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, physicians and other healthcare professionals as well as social workers, educators and public safety officials. Registration is $125. Students majoring in health professions or any of the related fields may attend for free.

The program has been approved for six hours of continuing pharmacy education credit and six hours of continuing medical education credit. Seminar speakers include College of Pharmacy faculty Randall Tackett, Merrill Norton and Trina von Waldner.
